NEW JERSEY OVERHAULS FOOD SAFETY CODE
New Jersey has adopted
the most sweeping changes to its food safety code since
the 1970s, bringing the state inline with national
standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). Sanitation in Retail Food Establishments and
Food and Beverage Vending Machines, Chapter 24 of
the New Jersey Administrative Code, is modeled on the
FDA Food Codes of 2001 and 2005. One feature of the new
code is that it classifies foodservice establishments
into 4 risk groups. Those that are classified in risk
group 3 require a "person in charge" to be certified
with a nationally recognized food safety course.
ServSafe, the nations premier food safety course meets
the state's requirement and has been taught at SYSCO
Metro New York since 1995. Classes are held monthly at
our Jersey City facility and are open to the public.
Information about our classes is available through this
web site under the menu heading "Food Safety". For a
